How to read an Ice Age map without overreading the evidence
A detailed-looking map can combine data with very different resolutions. Before interpreting an ancient shoreline or thickness value, check its date, spatial scale and underlying assumptions.
1. Separate the selected date from the data date
At 21,000 BP, the ice outline is visually interpolated between the 20,000 and 22,500 BP outlines. The thickness inspector still uses the nearest published snapshot, 20,000 BP. Intermediate outlines are animation, not new observations or a reconstruction of local retreat rates. Sea level is interpolated separately.

2. Separate a pixel from a measurement
The coastline is derived from elevation sampled at 10 arc-minutes. The thickness inspector uses a much coarser 1° grid. Zooming makes both larger on the screen without creating new evidence. A point close to an ice margin can sample a nearby ice-free node, or the reverse.
A rounded thickness such as 1,500 m is a model estimate at the nearest node. The precision of its typography and the position of the pointer do not make it a measurement at your exact coordinates.
3. Check the vertical reference
The sea-level series has been shifted so its 0 ka sample is zero. Modern terrain is compared with that shifted global curve. The result omits changes in local land elevation and regional relative sea level. A single coastline should therefore not be used to date the flooding of a particular archaeological site.

4. Ask which conclusion the evidence supports
The view can show the broad relationship between lower seas and exposed shelves. It cannot establish ancient road networks, a population’s journey or the speed of a local flood. For those questions, seek the relevant regional study rather than extracting an answer from the map’s appearance.
